Sport Fishing - Inshore / Offshore

With over 70 registered world records within 60 nautical miles of the bay, it's no wonder that this fisherman's paradise has a reputation for providing some of the world's best sport-fishing. Depending on the season, Inshore anglers will look for Spanish and Sierra mackerel, snapper, grouper, triggerfish, cabrilla, jacks and roosterfish (which are year-round residents), with offshore anglers finding sailfish, striped, black and blue marlin, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, dorado and wahoo. The mouth of the Sierpe River, part of a lush mangrove estuary and the area around Isla Violines offer a good chance for snook and corvina. Being out on the water also brings opportunities to see other marine life such as whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sea birds, and flying fish, among others.

We offer both full and half-day trips for everyone from novice anglers to experienced fly-rodders. All of the captains know these waters very well and many of them have grown up fishing in this area. Trips are run on your choice of 2 locally owned and operated fully equipped sport fishing boats (please see below).

OPTION 1: Reel Escape or Reel Time

The Reel Escape (up to 5 people) is a meticulously maintained, American made, 35 foot 2002 CABO Sport Fishing Yacht powered by twin 450 hp CAT diesel engines. The boat is fully equipped for your safety and comfort with top of the line fishing equipment, an air-conditioned salon, a full bathroom and kitchen.

The Reel Time (up to 4 people) is specifically designed for the waters around Drake Bay. The Reel Time can either go offshore for sailfish or can fish the river mouths and beaches for Snook, Roosterfish, Mackerel and Snapper.

The Reel Escape & Reel Time is captained by Willy Atencio, a 35 year old native of Drake Bay, Costa Rica. Captain Willy is a seasoned international charter captain working on sportfishing yachts ranging from 31 feet to 47 feet in Costa Rica, the United States and the Caribbean for the last 12 years. Captain Willy has spent his life on fishing boats and is considered the best captain in Drake Bay and one of the best in Costa Rica. The waters surrounding Drake Bay offer numerous fishing choices. Typical species we catch include Sailfish, Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Roosterfish, Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack and Pompano. Occasionally, the lucky angler has the opportunity to tangle with a Blue or Black Marlin. For all billfish and Roosterfish, we practice catch and release with circle hooks. For excellent table fare, species such as Tuna or Grouper, we will filet your catch and have it ready for the chef that night. Willy and his mate will customize each trip based on the your skill level and the species you wish to target to ensure you have a once in a lifetime adventure that you will never forget.

Trip Descriptions

Reel Escape or Reel Time Half Day Trip — A 1/2 day trip is a full 5 hours. Depending upon what is biting and what species the angler wants to target, we can go out to the island for Grouper, Snapper, Tuna, and Wahoo or stay in-shore and target Roosterfish, Mackerel, Jacks and Snook. We do not go offshore on a half-day trip.

Reel Escape or Reel Time Full Day Trip — On a full day trip the angler has many options. We generally pick up our clients at 7 am and return at 4 pm. For those anglers who want to target Sailfish, Marlin, and Mahi-Mahi we generally go out around 15-25 miles depending upon where the fish are. It's often possible to go offshore in the morning and catch and release Sailfish and then fish for some dinner (Grouper, Snapper, etc.) in the afternoon. The key is to communicate with your Captain on what type of fishing you want to do.

Marlin Trip (Reel Escape only) — Drake Bay is one of the closest locations to some of the best Marlin fishing in the world. Catching a Blue or Balack Marlin is truly an experience of a lifetime. Feeling their awesome power and watching them dart across the water and make leaps is considered the ultimate big-game fising experience. Of course "fishing" is "fishing" but the areas we fish have been red hot for Marlin for the last few years. We have all top of the line equipment that is necessary to battle these big boys. We usually travel about 1 1/2 - 2 hours one way to reach the best spots. Our professional Captain and two mates will handle everything you need for a day on the water. Make sure you bring your camera and/or video camera.

1/2 Day Reel Time $450.00 USD
1/2 Day Reel Escape $800.00 USD
